Abstract

This working paper introduces the Σ-Index, a dynamic early-warning indicator designed to detect structural fragility in complex adaptive systems. Unlike traditional volatility or price-based indicators, the Σ-Index measures divergence in latent growth dynamics between structural concentration (C) and adaptive feedback capacity (R). The index is formally defined as: \Sigma_t = g^C_t - g^R_t where g^C_t and g^R_t are time-varying drift components extracted from a Local Linear Trend state-space model estimated via the Kalman filter. The framework treats structural fragility as a dynamic imbalance rather than a static distributional condition. An empirical application to the German energy system (2000–2022) demonstrates that the Σ-Index signals increasing structural vulnerability significantly earlier than conventional price- or volatility-based measures. Robustness checks include: alternative measurement error specifications (diagonal, block-diagonal, and source-clustered covariance structures), Monte Carlo identification tests, impulse-response analysis of drift shocks, and VAR-based validation of dynamic interactions. Results indicate that structural divergence between concentration and feedback growth rates can accumulate during periods of apparent stability, leading to delayed but amplified systemic adjustment. This paper provides: a formal state-space specification, identification diagnostics, robustness analysis, and a reproducible modeling framework suitable for application to financial, infrastructural, and socio-economic systems. The Σ-Index is intended as a structural monitoring tool rather than a normative policy instrument. It complements existing distributional and volatility measures by focusing on dynamic drift divergence in system architecture.
