Abstract

For economic progress, investments are essential, and these investments stem from savings. Insurance companies play a crucial role in harnessing the savings of individuals, particularly those in middle and lower income brackets. These savings are then directed towards investments that contribute to economic advancement. Insurance fulfills several important economic roles that are primarily different from those of other financial intermediaries. In recent years (FY23-24), India's insurance sector accounted for approximately 3.7% to 4% of the GDP, with life insurance making up around 2.8% and non-life (general) insurance accounting for 1%. The sector reached a peak of 4.2% during the COVID pandemic. Although this indicates growth, it is still below the global average, presenting considerable opportunities for development as the sector aims for 5% penetration by 2030, working to narrow the gap with more developed nations. Fortunately, a number of intriguing research avenues have come up over the past decade to map the precise contributions of insurance in both the process of economic growth and the welfare of the impoverished. According to the facts, insurance significantly boosts economic growth by enhancing the investment environment and encouraging a more efficient mix of activities than would be carried out in the absence of risk management tools. The complementary growth of banks and other financial systems amplifies this impact. According to empirical research, non-life insurance boosts economic growth in nations with a wide range of development levels. Since life insurance usually makes up a lower portion of the overall insurance market in low-income countries, life insurance significantly contributes to growth, particularly in wealthier nations. Naturally, the statistics did not prove that insurance played a significant causal influence in the overall expansion of the Indian economy.
