Transchromatic Homotopy Theory and the Structure of the Stable Homotopy Groups of Spheres
Abstract
This monograph explores the deep structural properties of the stable homotopy groups of spheres, *(S), through the lens of transchromatic homotopy theory. We systematically analyze the chromatic filtration of the stable homotopy category SH, focusing on the interplay between monochromatic layers LK(n)SH and their assembly via the chromatic fracture squares. Central to this exposition is the role of the Morava stabilizer groups Gn and the associated moduli stack of formal groups MFG in governing the E2-term of the Adams-Novikov Spectral Sequence (ANSS). We provide a rigorous treatment of the height-shifting phenomena, examining the descent data required to reconstruct global homotopy types from local chromatic strata. Furthermore, we discuss the implications of the Nilpotence and Periodicity Theorems on the global organization of *(S), culminating in a survey of recent advances in transchromatic character maps and their relation to the telescope conjecture.
