Abstract

OnFebruary 3, 2026, a single AI product launch erased $285 billion in enterprise software market capitalisationwithin 48 hoursa—an event traders named the SaaSpocalypse. The prevailing explanation—that AI agents arereplacing SaaS tools—is incomplete and strategically dangerous. This paper argues the SaaSpocalypse is acapital reallocation event, not a product displacement event. We identify a dual mechanism. Budget displacement: $635–665 billion in annual hyperscaler AI CapExbis cannibalising the IT budgets that previously funded SaaS growth—a pattern confirmed by three years ofsequential growth deceleration predating any AI agent launch.c Budget displacement alone, however, operateson quarterly cycles and cannot explain 23% index compression in two weeks.d A second, faster mechanism isrequired. Private AI capital absorption: institutional investors seeking pure AI exposure are structurally forcedinto private rounds (OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI; combined valuations exceeding $1.4 trillion),e draining demandfrom public equities at investment-capital speed. This speed signature distinguishes the two mechanismsempirically and yields falsifiable predictions.
