Mathematical Modeling and Optimization of Twist in Cotton Rovings (An Integrated, Science-Based Approach)
Abstract
The twist per inch (TPI) in cotton rovings is critical for achieving the necessary fibre cohesion and overallyarn strength during spinning. This article develops mathematically rigorous formulations for determiningthe optimum twist in both carded and combed rovings by integrating key fibre parameters: fibre fineness, roving hank H (measured in Ne, defined as the length per unit weight—e.g., 840 yards per pound), staplelength (UHML), and noil removal percentage. Using dimensional analysis, energy minimization concepts, andvariational principles, we derive empirical formulas from first principles and validate them with step-by-stepnumerical examples. In addition, practical half-lea breaking strength testing is discussed as a guideline fortwist optimization. Finally, the relationship between TPI and the Twist Multiplier (TM) is established toenable precise process control in modern spinning operations.
