THE SILENT HEIST Special Edition — The 950 Million Identity Heist and the Wedge That Followed
Abstract
This special investigation documents the global identity heist of Q1 2026, in which over 600 FortiGate devices across 55 countries were compromised, leading to the potential exposure of up to 950 million identities. The analysis connects the FortiGate campaign to parallel vulnerabilities (CVE-2026-24858, CVE-2026-25815, CVE-2026-21643), European bank outages in February 2026, and public breaches including Qantas (5.7M), UBS (130,000 employees), Desjardins (9.7M), and France (45M+ records). Drawing on the author's 1988 Citibank investigation documented in HACKERS: Australia's Darkest Hack and the Rise of AI-Driven Crime, the report examines the silence of affected institutions, violations of the EU Digital Operational Resilience Act (DORA), and the geopolitical attribution puzzle—including the wedge theory suggesting deliberate misdirection. The investigation concludes with actionable guidance for individuals and a warning about AI-driven crime in Q2 2026.
