Gravel: A Polished One
Abstract
Gravel — A Polished One is a reflective philosophical poem that explores life-stage completion through the metaphor of a gravel resting in a tranquil riverbed. Once part of a mountain and shaped by storms, currents, and time, the polished gravel symbolizes identity refined by endurance. A dried leaf, similarly detached from its original terrain, arrives beside it, representing parallel journeys converging in quiet acceptance. The poem does not dwell in loss or decline but in dignified arrival — a state where turbulence has ceased, resistance has softened, and identity remains intact without the need for assertion. The concluding image of a tiny fish whispering a gentle “longing kiss” suggests that even in stillness, life continues softly and meaningfully. This work reflects themes of philosophical completion, coexistence beyond former heights, and serene integration within the natural flow of existence. Keywords River philosophy; Life-stage reflection; Identity and dignity; Existential maturity; Completion; Tranquility; Transformation; Symbolic poetry; Philosophical acceptance; Serenity in aging.
