Abstract

The modern electric power system is undergoing an unprecedented transformation driven by increasing energy demand, rapid integration of renewable energy resources, expansion of smart grids, and advancements in power electronics and digital control technologies. These developments have significantly enhanced system capabilities while simultaneously introducing new challenges in maintaining stability, reliability, and resilience. In this evolving landscape, advanced understanding of power system stability has become more critical than ever. Advanced Power System Stability is a comprehensive multi-author volume developed to address the theoretical foundations, analytical techniques, and emerging trends associated with stability assessment and control in modern power systems. This book brings together contributions from experienced academicians, researchers, and industry professionals who have extensively worked in the areas of power system dynamics, control engineering, renewable integration, and grid modernization. The book systematically covers classical stability concepts—such as steady-state stability, transient stability, small-signal stability, voltage stability, and frequency stability—while extending the discussion to advanced and contemporary topics. These include stability issues in renewable-rich grids, the impact of inverter-based resources, wide-area monitoring systems (WAMS), synchrophasor technology, FACTS devices, HVDC systems, microgrids, and smart grid stability analysis. Special emphasis has been placed on: Mathematical modeling of synchronous machines and power system components Dynamic simulation and numerical methods for stability analysis Eigenvalue analysis and small-signal stability assessment Voltage collapse phenomena and mitigation strategies Frequency control in interconnected power systems Stability enhancement using FACTS and power electronic controllers Stability challenges in renewable-integrated and distributed generation systems Artificial intelligence and machine learning applications in stability prediction As a multi-author compilation, this book reflects diverse research insights while maintaining structural coherence and academic rigor. Each chapter has been carefully reviewed and edited to ensure clarity, technical depth, and practical relevance. The contributors have incorporated real-world case studies, simulation approaches, and analytical techniques to bridge the gap between theory and application. This book is designed to serve postgraduate students, doctoral researchers, faculty members, practicing engineers, and power system planners seeking advanced knowledge in stability analysis and control. It may also be used as a reference text for specialized courses in power system dynamics and smart grid technologies. The editors sincerely acknowledge the dedication and scholarly commitment of all contributing authors. We are equally grateful to the reviewers, institutional authorities, and publishing professionals whose support and constructive feedback have greatly enhanced the quality of this work. It is our hope that Advanced Power System Stability will contribute meaningfully to academic research, professional practice, and the sustainable development of resilient and secure power systems worldwide.
