Chromatic Shifts in the E-Theory of Finite Spectra and Transchromatic Character Maps
Abstract
This monograph investigates the structural implications of transchromatic character maps on the Morava E-theory of finite spectra, establishing a rigorous framework for what we term ``chromatic shifts.'' We analyze the descent properties of height n cohomology theories to height t < n via the geometry of p-divisible groups and the Drinfeld level structures associated with the Lubin-Tate moduli space. By extending the generalized character theory of Hopkins, Kuhn, and Ravenel, we construct a spectral sequence that converges to the transchromatic localization of the En-cohomology of finite complexes. Furthermore, we demonstrate that these chromatic shifts induce a filtration on the stable homotopy category that refines the classical chromatic filtration, providing new insights into the redshift phenomena and the asymptotic algebraicity of chromatic homotopy theory. The interplay between the equivariant structure of the free loop space and the formal geometry of the Morava stabilizer group is central to our main results.
