Inductive Character Theory and the Algebraic Anatomy of Brauer Blocks
Abstract
This paper explores the intricate relationship between inductive character theory and the algebraic structure of Brauer blocks in the modular representation theory of finite groups. We provide a comprehensive overview of how classical and modular character-theoretic techniques, particularly those involving induction and restriction, illuminate the structure and invariants of Brauer blocks. The study emphasizes the role of defect groups and their normalizers as 'local' approximations to the 'global' group, leveraging fundamental results like Brauer's Main Theorems and the Green correspondence. We demonstrate how an inductive approach, building character and module information from subgroups, offers profound insights into the decomposition matrices, character heights, and ultimately, the algebraic anatomy of these blocks. The paper consolidates existing knowledge and highlights the ongoing efforts to solve long-standing conjectures in the field by employing inductive strategies.
