Abstract

Algebraic Topology Without the Topology: Spaces, Manifolds, and Fibrations as Finite Linear AlgebraIn Linear Algebra Done Spectral, we proved that the entire theory of spectral sequences reduces to iterated rank-nullity on filtered chain complexes, with topology entering only in Step 1 — the choice of (V, d, ℱ). This paper eliminates Step 1. We prove that the construction of the chain complex, the differential, and the filtration from a topological space is itself a sequence of finite linear algebra operations. Specifically: A simplicial complex on n vertices is an incidence matrix Σ ∈ {0, 1}m×n. The boundary operator ∂k is an integer matrix whose entries are ±1 or 0, determined entirely by the combinatorics of Σ. Over any field k, the chain complex is a sequence of matrices with ∂k−1∂k = 0, and homology Hk = ker ∂k / im ∂k+1 is rank-nullity. No geometric realization is needed or used. A CW-complex is a block-partitioned nilpotent matrix: the cells of dimension k form block k, the attaching maps are the off-diagonal blocks, and the CW-filtration is the flag read off the blocks. The "topology" of a CW-complex is entirely encoded in the sparsity pattern and integer entries of this matrix. A manifold is a chain complex whose boundary matrices satisfy Poincaré duality: rank ∂k = rank ∂n−k⊤. A closed orientable n-manifold is a chain complex where the matrix ∂ and its transpose ∂⊤ produce identical rank sequences, read forward and backward. Geometry is a symmetry condition on a matrix. A fiber bundle F ↪ E → B is a block decomposition ∂E = ∂B ⊗ I + I ⊗ ∂F + Θ, where Θ encodes the twisting. The Serre filtration is the flag induced by the block structure of ∂B. When Θ = 0 (trivial bundle), the chain complex is a Kronecker product and the Künneth theorem is the dimension formula for tensor products. Rational homotopy theory (Sullivan–Quillen) proves that over ℚ, the entire homotopy type of a simply-connected space is determined by a differential graded algebra — a vector space with a multiplication and a differential. Topology over ℚ is literally DGA theory, which is literally linear algebra with a bilinear product. After this paper, topology has no remaining role. The shapes are gone. What remains is matrices.
