Abstract

Staphylus (Capilla) melangon (Mabille, 1883) Figures 1, 4 A – J, 10 G, 13 Taxonomic history. Mabille (1878) described epicaste without a genus, consequently a nomen nudum, and in 1883 correctly described it as Hesperia melangon, which was cited by different authors in the genera Staphylus and Pholisora. Later, Mabille (1903) cited the name epicaste in the genus Staphylus. Hayward (1937) described Pholisora rileyi, which was cited in the genus Staphylus by different authors. Evans (1953) synonymized P. rileyi and Staphylus punctiseparatus Hayward, 1933 with Staphylus epicaste Mabille, 1903. Evans (1953) proposed subspecies for this taxon: Staphylus epicaste melangon, S. e. epicaste, and the newly described Staphylus e. stanga. As the name epicaste was described without a genus name, violating the Art. 11.9. 3 of ICZN, O. Mielke and Casagrande (1998) corrected the subspecific names, with melangon, epicaste and stanga considered subspecies of Staphylus melangon. Other authors mentioned this subspecies in taxonomic comments, faunistic studies and catalogues.
