Abstract

Staphylus (Capilla) neivae Lemes sp. nov. Figures 1, 7 Q, R, 9 A – D, 11 Diagnosis. Staphylus (C.) neivae sp. nov. is readily distinguished from the other species of Staphylus (Capilla) due to a combination of characters of the male genitalia (Fig. 9 A – D): uncus very ovoid at base, ampulla forming a stout, dentate prolongation at the proximal-ventral margin, presence of small denticles dorsally on the distal portion of aedeagus, and fultura superior bearing two dense clusters of small, thin spines laterally. Male description. Fig. 7 Q, R. Head: Brown with some golden scales dorsally, pure cream ventrally. FW length: 1.4–1.5 cm. HW length: 0.9–1.1 cm. DFW: Brown. Two or three white dots on the subapical area and one in CuA 1 - CuA 2. Fringe bicolored, brown and white. VFW: Same white markings as on DFW. VHW: Lighter brown. Genitalia (Fig. 9 A – D): Uncus longer than wide, very ovoid at base, bearing a tuft of long hair-like scales dorsally, apex very narrow, short and tubular. Fenestra developed. Valva: sacculus rounded, bearing some hairs internally; harpe rounded at distal margin, exceeding ampulla; ampulla broad, rounded at distal margin, not exceeding harpe, bearing large, stout, socketed spines at distal margin, very concave at the proximal margin, forming a stout, dentate prolongation at the proximal-ventral margin. Aedeagus shorter than valva, bearing small denticles dorsally on the distal portion. Fultura superior bearing two dense clusters of small, thin spines laterally. Female. Unknown. Distribution. Fig. 11. Brazil: Bahia, Ceará, Maranhão, Minas Gerais, Paraíba, Pernambuco and Rio Grande do Norte. Temporal distribution. Staphylus (C.) neivae sp. nov. is recorded from February – May, July – August, October and December. Etymology. This species name is dedicated to Neiva Lucia Assmann, the first author’s aunt. Remarks. Although Staphylus (Capilla) neivae sp. nov. demonstrated low genetic distance from S. (C.) ascalon (Table 2), their genitalia are very distinct, confirming their status as two different species. Type material. Holotype (Fig. 7 Q, R).
