THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LISTENING SKILLS AND PHONETIC COMPETENCE
Abstract
Listening skills and phonetic competence are closely interconnected components of successful language acquisition. Effective listening enables learners to perceive and distinguish sounds accurately, while phonetic competence supports correct pronunciation and speech production. This article explores the theoretical and practical relationship between listening comprehension and phonetic development in second language learning. It examines how auditory perception influences pronunciation accuracy, the role of segmental and suprasegmental features in comprehension, and effective teaching strategies that integrate listening and phonetics. The study concludes that strengthening listening skills significantly enhances phonetic competence and overall communicative ability.
