Abstract

This study develops and empirically operationalizes a structural framework for measuring integrative capacity in higher education institutions (HEIs). Using bibliometric data from OpenAlex (2014–2024), the paper introduces measurable indicators for Disciplinary Compression (Φ), Integrative Capacity (I), and Exploratory Reserve (R) within a panel design across OECD-based research universities. Disciplinary Compression is quantified as dominance concentration across Level-1 concept classifications, while Integrative Capacity is proxied via cross-disciplinary citation density (CDDI). Exploratory Reserve is operationalized through Shannon entropy of institutional publication diversity. A fixed-effects panel model evaluates whether increasing structural compression correlates negatively with cross-domain integration and adaptive responsiveness. Beyond bibliometric measurement, the study situates its findings within AI-augmented knowledge environments. As artificial intelligence increasingly automates domain-specific optimization tasks, the structural bottleneck of educational systems shifts from expertise production toward cross-domain integration and systemic diagnostic competence. The analysis suggests that institutional resilience under technological acceleration depends not on reducing specialization, but on maintaining sufficient exploratory reserve to prevent over-compression (Φ > R). The paper contributes to systems science, educational research, and bibliometric methodology by: Providing a reproducible pipeline for institutional compression measurement Introducing a panel-based resilience indicator (R/Φ) Linking structural educational design to adaptive capacity under AI acceleration Offering a scalable framework for comparative institutional diagnostics All methodological components are designed for replication and extension.
