Abstract

Description This report documents a networking session titled “Increasing gender equality in marine research and fostering alternative problem‑solving approaches”, held during the 23rd Danske Havforskermøde (20–22 January 2026, Helsingør, Denmark). The session brought together approximately 60 participants to reflect on persistent gender inequalities in marine and freshwater aquatic science and to discuss how inclusive networks can support women and gender‑diverse researchers across career stages. The session combined keynote contributions, early‑career researcher perspectives, and interactive audience engagement. Speakers addressed structural barriers in marine research, the importance of sustained Nordic leadership on gender equality, and the limitations of gender‑blind approaches in male‑dominated research environments. Early‑career contributions highlighted the critical role of formal and informal networks in fostering visibility, mentorship, interdisciplinary collaboration, and inclusive research cultures. An interactive discussion engaged participants in the co‑design and launch of a Nordic Network for Women and Gender‑Diverse People in Marine and Freshwater Aquatic Science. Participants contributed ideas on communication platforms, mentoring structures, and long‑term sustainability, while also identifying structural challenges such as bias, workload, and recognition. Overall, the report highlights inclusive networks as essential for equitable, innovative, and resilient marine research communities in the Nordic region.
