Abstract

This work examines why physical models are needed to study the distribution of prime numbers.Although primes are generated by deterministic arithmetic rules, numerical evidence shows thatthe sequence of prime gaps exhibits long-range anti-correlations, 1/f noise, weak multifractality, and scale-invariant statistical behavior—features commonly associated with critical and complexsystems rather than classical analytic number theory. Building on Terence Tao’s “structure–randomness” framework, we propose that the distribution ofprimes can be viewed as a “mathematical critical system”: a deterministic mathematical structurethat nevertheless displays statistical signatures of criticality. We argue that physical modelsprovide essential tools for understanding the global statistical behavior of prime gaps, and thata synthesis of analytic number theory and statistical physics may open new directions for thestudy of prime distributions.
