How I Passed Microsoft AZ-204 as a Working Azure Admin, and Why CERTIFICATION EXAM Quizzes Made the Difference
Abstract
A quick intro so you know where I’m coming from Azure platform, including working with Azure Functions, App Service deployment, managed identities, storage accounts, and monitoring, but didn't feel comfortable that I truly understood the developer exam version of Azure. There is a significant difference between being able to keep the platform operational versus designing and implementing a solution based upon constraints and being able to justify your design choices. As a result of that, I chose to take exam AZ-204: Developing Solutions for Microsoft Azure, the exam required for Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer Associate. I passed the exam, and this article is my honest account of what the exam experience was like for me, the things that caused me difficulty, the exam preparation plan/timeline that ultimately worked for me, and a comparison of the CERTIFICATION EXAM to the other options that are typically recommended. What the AZ-204 exam really is (and what it isn’t) Status: active, not retired At the moment, AZ-204 is the only exam that provides you with the opportunity to earn your Azure Developer Associate certification. blogs that refer to old Azure developer exams, make sure you check the dates; Microsoft regularly updates their certification pages, and the official page is the best source of information. What skills Microsoft expects you to have Microsoft doesn't have strict prerequisites like "pass X before taking this exam" but has an updated exam outline under ""Exam Skills Measured"" from Microsoft Learn where you can see what skills will be tested on the exam and what percentage of the total score each skill represents, so you can figure out where your strengths and weaknesses are with regard to the required skills. The five testing domains are: Develop Azure compute solutions (25-30%) Develop for Azure storage (15-20%) Implement Azure security (15-20%) Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize Azure solutions (5-10%) Connect to and consume Azure services and third-party services (20-25%) The five areas listed seem fairly well organized on paper but in reality, they all seem to be ''glue work'' because they test how well candidates can use the various Azure services by having them create realistic scenarios by combining multiple Azure Services. Exam time, question style, and delivery options The Microsoft certification website indicates there's a 100 minute time limit for completing the assessment. Additionally, assessments are proctored with potential interactive elements. You typically can choose to take exams online proctored or via test center. The Microsoft scheduling page indicates most exams provide Pearson VUE as an testing vendor and whether an exam is available to be taken online or at a test centre is dependant on the availability at the time you schedule the exam.According to Pearson VUE, Microsoft exams can be completed either on- line through OnVUE or at an authorised Pearson VUE test centre. When you are scheduled online via OnVUE, there are strict check-in procedures (ID photo, room scan, and technology check) which I used to consider part of preparing for taking the exam. Failing these check-in procedures has caused me to lose momentum after when I should be ready to take the exam. Scheduling window and availability The Microsoft exam schedule does not have two exams a year, but in general, you can take them when they are available. Microsoft states that you can schedule an exam no more than 90 days in advance and they limit the number of exams you are able to have scheduled at any one time. Passing score and how scoring works The way to score technical exams is that they will receive a score from 1-1000, with any score of 700 or higher passing. Microsoft also points out that a 700 is not equal to 70%. The significance of this is that you will evaluate how you prepare for an exam differently by using these two scoring criteria. You will stop asking yourself, "How many did I get correct on the exam", but "Am I consistently above average in the skills measured by the exam." Exam price and regional differences Microsoft usually shows the cost of exams in US dollars, but there will be local currency adjustments. Most sources of independent testing show the cost of non-fundamental Azure exams to be $165, but there are significant differences. Let me be clear: Microsoft has not published a single price for exams across all countries and regions anywhere in a single easy to look up place. The only thing that is verifiable at this time is that pricing will be different depending on where you are located, and you will see at the time you schedule your exam the final amount for the exam amount. Where to take it (including the “Milan test center” question) I'm not going to provide you with the addresses of any Authorized Testing Centers in Milan because the information from the Authorized Testing Centers changes frequently based upon whether or not they are testing with Pearson VUE currently or not (and because I don't have access to any address information on them). The verifiable information you will need is: To find a testing center in Milan you will contact Microsoft and use the links to schedule your exam - you will be provided with access to a site set up by Pearson VUE in which to search for Authorized Testing Centers; Use the search feature to search by city to find the closest Test center for Milan. The reality of difficulty: what hit me the hardest AZ-204 is described by many as “moderate” or “hard” based on a single number. For me, the difficulty was much more specific than that: 1) Identity and Key Vault problems don’t stay theoretical When the exam asks about securing secrets and enabling access, it is often required for you to know how to identify RBAC versus access-policy patterns and how managed identity will work with those scenarios. As noted in Microsoft's own troubleshooting guidance, a common real world cause of failed Key Vault access is RBAC role assignments not being done correctly. This is exactly how the exam felt, “Why can’t the app get the secret and what do you need to change?” rather than “What is Key Vault?” 2) Integrations are where time disappears The earliest I lost my way on the exam and when I found it difficult to completed my Integrated Functionality + Event + Storage + Authentication scenario questions and that was shared by other candidates discussing their experience with the exam. . 3) Monitoring is easy to ignore until it costs you points The official exam blueprint has the same weight for monitoring and troubleshooting as other task types (5-10%) but it is included in the exam. The way the questions were presented were not like “What is Application Insights”; but rather “What signal will tell you what the true problem is” or “Where do you config diagnostics?”. What I tried first (and why it didn’t fully work) I started off on a “responsible” path; using Microsoft Learn modules, taking notes, and doing labs to build up my vocabulary and confidence. However, I noticed three major issues: While I could explain the different services, I would have difficulty in selecting a good answer from a couple of possibilities under pressure. I didn’t practice being comfortable with the reading style of the exam; there were many long prompts, hidden constraints within the prompt and using “best option” logic to select my passing answer. I did not have any type of feedback loop to help me identify my patterns; for example, “I consistently failed on the identity sections” or “I misunderstood the consistency of storage.” Therefore, the time has come to use practice questions as part of my studying Why I chose CERTIFICATION EXAM (the criteria that mattered to me) I didn’t choose a platform because someone on the internet said “it’s the best.” I chose based on what I needed: A routine I could do after work without wasting time deciding what to study Timed practice that felt like a real exam session A way to find my weak spots and circle back intentionally The AZ-204 Preparation Content of the CERTICATION EXAM is done as quiz-style type practice, that has been designed to replicate the conditions of taking a traditional, “real-life” test by having both Quizzes that are based off of traditional testing methods. . To put it another way, I can clearly verify that the page I referenced for the CERTIFICATION EXAM had a section titled “CERTIFICATION EXAM” (which is where I get most of my research data from) contains many links to guides and access points like “Start Quiz” and “Buy Now” but NOT a clear and user-friendly number that I can directly reference to all of the questions in my reference section. Therefore I will not be making any references to that number.. From what I can also verify from the page about the AZ204: that all of the practice questions were based off traditional testing methods, that all of the quizzes were designed with a specific focus of simulating the actual test taking environment, and that all of the questions could have been created as either practice or quizzes. . How I used CERTIFICATION EXAM (my routine, not a generic plan) My timeline 8 weeks while working full-time, so there wasn't a perfect daily routine, which is okay, because some weeks I was only able to complete three sessions. However, I did continue to be consistent with my schedule. My weekly pattern Mon–Thu (45–75 minutes/day) One quiz block of focus (e.g. storage + authentication scenarios) Short notes on "why I was incorrect" from reviewing answers that were incorrect right away Friday (60–90 minutes) One run on time to build managing fatigue and being able to pace yourself Weekend (2–3 hours total) Small labs of the following: Functions, Triggers/Bindings, Storage Patterns, Identity Flows One more quiz run targeting those that have been weak in the domain
