Abstract

This proposal introduces and defines the concept of the “Zero-th Industry,” referring to pregnancy, childbirth, childcare, and human reproductive activities as the foundational economic production processes that precede all existing industrial sectors. Modern economic classification systems recognize primary, secondary, and tertiary industries; however, the production and maintenance of human beings—the labor subjects enabling all economic activity—have largely remained outside formal economic categorization. This paper conceptualizes human reproduction and care work as a social production process and positions the Zero-th Industry as the precondition underlying the entire industrial structure. The framework calls for reconsideration of unpaid care labor, demographic reproduction, declining birthrates, and long-term economic sustainability, offering a theoretical basis for reexamining the structural foundations of contemporary economic systems.
