The Evolutionary Chinese Room: A Thermodynamic Recovery of Semantic Physics
Abstract
We demonstrate a structural isomorphism between Searle's Chinese Room argument and the epistemological status of the Standard Model in particle physics. Physicists manipulate formal symbols (Lagrangians, gauge groups, Feynman rules) according to purely syntactic instructions, producing predictions that match experiment to extraordinary precision yet lack semantic understanding of why these particular mathematical structures rather than others. This parallels the Chinese Room inhabitant who manipulates unintelligible characters according to formal rules, producing correct outputs without understanding Chinese. By extending Searle's thought experiment to include evolutionary origins—where the rulebook emerges through iterative thermodynamic contact with reality rather than being supplied by an external programmer—we resolve the apparent paradox: semantic understanding is the temporal integral of thermodynamically validated contacts with reality's constraint structure. We formalize conditions under which systems (human, artificial, or scientific communities) can construct genuine semantic meaning from syntactic competence, establishing criteria for distinguishing knowledge systems that possess understanding from those that merely execute inherited formalisms. This framework dissolves Wigner's "unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics" puzzle and provides methodological guidance for Natural Philosophy's restoration.
