Abstract

This paper explores the fundamental role of irreducible representations in understanding and leveraging the decomposability of tensors, with significant implications for optimal learning algorithms. Tensors, as multi-dimensional arrays, are ubiquitous in fields ranging from signal processing and quantum mechanics to machine learning and neuroscience. Their inherent complexity often necessitates decomposition into simpler, interpretable components. We posit that the theory of irreducible representations, deeply rooted in group theory, provides a powerful algebraic framework for characterizing the intrinsic structure and symmetries of tensors, thereby revealing their canonical decompositions. By analyzing tensors through the lens of irreducible representations of relevant symmetry groups, we can identify unique decomposition patterns, quantify the information content of each component, and develop robust methods for dimensionality reduction and feature extraction. This approach not only elucidates the theoretical underpinnings of various tensor decomposition algorithms but also offers a pathway to construct more efficient and statistically sound learning models that can exploit the inherent multi-linear structure of data, leading to enhanced interpretability and predictive performance. We delineate how this theoretical framework can unlock novel insights into data structures and pave the way for advancements in tensor-based machine learning.
