THE ROLE OF ADVANCED STUDIES ON LANGUAGE TEACHERS' COMPETENCE
Abstract
This study examined the role of advanced studies in enhancing language teachers’ competence in the context of 21st-century education. Specifically, it aimed to determine the relationship between higher academic qualifications and teachers’ pedagogical skills, classroom management, technology integration, student engagement, and career progression. The research employed a mixed-methods, non-experimental design, integrating quantitative and qualitative approaches. Data were collected from 350 junior and senior high school language teachers in the Schools Division Office I of Pangasinan through a validated survey questionnaire, Performance Management and Evaluation System (PMES) ratings, classroom observations, interviews, and focus group discussions. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics to determine levels of competence and significant differences, while qualitative data were thematically analyzed to capture teachers’ experiences and challenges. Findings revealed that teachers with advanced studies demonstrated significantly higher competence in pedagogical practices, classroom management, and student engagement, as well as improved career progression outcomes such as promotion and leadership confidence. However, technology integration emerged as a relative area of need across groups. The study also identified distinct challenges among novice and experienced teachers in adapting to evolving educational demands. Based on the findings, the CAREFUL Model (Competence Advancement through Reflective Education, Formal Upgrading, and Enhanced Teaching Competence) was proposed to strengthen continuous professional development. Overall, the study affirms that advanced studies play a vital role in improving language teachers’ competence and professional growth in the era of Education 4.0.
