Abstract
This dataset contains numerical data associated with finite element method (FEM) simulations of contact force transmission through a soft electronic skin integrating piezoelectric tactile transducers. The investigated sensing system consists of PVDF-based piezoelectric transducers mounted on a rigid substrate and covered by a compliant elastomeric layer. The dataset was generated to investigate the mechanical response of the sensing system under indentation conditions involving both normal and tangential contact force components. The numerical analysis considers a spherical indenter interacting with the soft protective layer and evaluates the resulting normal stress transmitted to the underlying piezoelectric transducer. The provided CSV file contains simulation parameters, including indenter radius, transducer radius, geometrical configuration, normal and tangential force components, and the corresponding average normal stress values where available. The data include different loading configurations and geometrical conditions, supporting the investigation of stress transmission through the compliant sensing layer. The dataset is associated with the development of a model-based framework combining analytical contact mechanics and FEM simulations to investigate the influence of sensor geometry, contact conditions, and applied forces on the mechanical response of soft electronic skins. The resulting methodology supports the design and optimization of tactile sensing systems and provides a foundation for model-based contact force reconstruction. The dataset is associated with the following peer-reviewed publication, which provides a detailed description of the analytical modeling framework, numerical methodology, and simulation results: C. Micheli, G. Berselli, and L. Seminara, "Model-based approach for indentation on soft electronic skin," Mechatronics, vol. 102, Art. no. 103225, 2024.
