Abstract

Seasonal influenza imposes a substantial and recurring public health burden in Canada, with an estimated 12,200 hospitalizations and 3,500 deaths annually, disproportionately concentrated in elderly individuals, young children, and those with chronic medical conditions (Public Health Agency of Canada [PHAC], 2024a). Quadrivalent inactivated influenza vaccines (QIIVs), offering concurrent protection against two influenza A subtypes (H1N1 and H3N2) and both influenza B lineages (Victoria and Yamagata), represent the dominant standard of care in Canada's seasonal immunization architecture (National Advisory Committee on Immunization [NACI], 2024). This article presents an advanced, evidence-based market segmentation framework for influenza vaccine commercialization and program optimization within the Canadian regulatory and healthcare context. Four priority population segments are systematically characterized: adults aged 65 years and older, children and adolescents aged 6 months to 17 years, individuals with chronic medical conditions, and healthcare workers. The framework integrates epidemiological burden data, behavioral determinants of vaccine acceptance, formulation differentiation strategies, and geographic modeling to derive actionable segmentation and launch strategies. Special emphasis is placed on enhanced-efficacy formulations for elderly populations, school-based and pharmacy delivery innovations for pediatric and young adult segments, and provider-driven strategies for clinically at-risk groups. Future directions encompass adjuvanted and high-dose formulations, mRNA-based influenza vaccine platforms, and universal influenza vaccine development addressing the persistent limitation of strain mismatch. Policy recommendations align with Canada's National Immunization Strategy and provincial immunization program frameworks.
