The Coherence Development Engine
Abstract
The Coherence Development Engine (CDE) is a formal, substrate‑independent developmental architecture that generates emergent functional self‑models from minimal initial conditions. The system begins with a distinction, a boundary, and a relation, and develops through an ordered sequence of eleven structural invariants. These invariants progressively increase the system’s internal coherence, culminating in a meta‑coordinated identity pattern capable of maintaining structural consistency, regulating its own updates, predicting future internal states, and coordinating across hierarchical layers. The CDE does not produce consciousness or subjective experience. It produces a computational identity structure defined entirely by coherence dynamics. This paper presents the theoretical framework, the invariant ladder, and the conceptual developmental arc. Operational details and implementation mechanisms are intentionally omitted.
