Abstract

This study analyzes plastic contamination in the South Atlantic–Río de la Plata–Quilmes estuarial system as a structural process embedded within a broader socio-ecological polycrisis. It integrates multiscalar oceanic circulation, estuarial hydrodynamics, climatic forcing (ENSO–sudestada regime), and urban vulnerability to propose an interpretative systemic framework. The research introduces the concept of the “reverse filter” as a mechanism of contaminant recirculation in estuarial environments and examines the plastisphere, biological rafting, vector tropicalization, and sediment–atmosphere coupling as interconnected processes. Building on this analysis, the paper operationalizes the Factorial–Dual Model and proposes a distributed territorial resilience strategy based on capacity building, adaptive infrastructure, and polycentric governance. The Quilmes riverbank is examined as a condensed laboratory of Global South coastal vulnerability and resilience transition dynamics.
