Why These Six Masses? A Theoretical Companion to the Planck Mass Product Relation
Abstract
This note accompanies the empirical observation [1] that the product of six Standard Model particle masses equals the Planck mass times m_e⁵ to 0.005σ precision. Here we explore why the winning set {μ, d, W, Z, H, n} might be physically distinguished rather than numerically accidental. We advance four mutually reinforcing arguments: (1) the set constitutes a minimal complete basis of the Standard Model's mass-generating sectors; (2) the relation naturally selects the infrared-stable vacuum state at the QCD confinement scale; (3) the product may correspond to a functional determinant structure in the one-loop effective action; and (4) the formula encodes a self-consistency condition connecting four fundamental energy scales. We present a key new numerical result: explicit integration of the one-loop SM renormalization group equations demonstrates that the product relation is not an RG invariant (it varies by >300% across energy scales), but is satisfied at a single physically distinguished scale Q ≈ 2 GeV — precisely the energy window where the QCD vacuum transitions from the regime of asymptotically free quarks to the regime of confined hadrons. The relation thus behaves as an effective infrared invariant: a quantity that is not conserved along the RG flow, but whose value is locked to a precise condition at the confinement endpoint. This supports the interpretation that the formula is an infrared boundary condition on the SM vacuum rather than a symmetry of the RG flow.
