Abstract

This article proposes to stabilize the term Pre‑Basque (Pre‑B) as an operational category distinct from both the reconstructed Proto‑Basque and the attested modern Basque language. The central hypothesis is that certain formal, morphological, and toponymic regularities cannot be satisfactorily explained within the simple opposition “Proto‑Basque ↔ modern Basque” and require the introduction of an intermediate analytical level. After establishing a minimal definition of Pre‑B, the article outlines delimitation criteria, illustrates the approach through two heuristic micro‑cases, discusses the methodological and theoretical implications, and proposes an empirical validation protocol to be developed in detail in the forthcoming handbook. The aim is to provide a rigorous, testable, and reproducible conceptual tool capable of improving the explanatory coherence of linguistic and toponymic analyses relating to the ancient layers of the Basque domain.
