A unified model of atrial anatomy and electrophysiology in atrial fibrillation
Abstract
This repository contains the MATLAB code and synthetic atrial population generated for the study: A unified model of atrial anatomy and electrophysiology in atrial fibrillation Study abstract Structural and electrophysiological remodelling of the left atrium underlies persistent atrial fibrillation, yet how atrial anatomy relates to conduction properties remains poorly defined. Using statistical modelling, we quantified coupled variation between three-dimensional left atrial geometry and conduction velocity distributions measured during fibrillation to better understand these relationships and enable the generation of realistic synthetic atrial populations. Left atrial geometries and per-vertex conduction-velocity maps were derived from charge-density mapping in 49 patients undergoing first-time ablation. Statistical shape, appearance, and joint shape-appearance models revealed associations between atrial anatomy and conduction, with the dominant joint mode linking atrial enlargement to regional conduction slowing, most prominently on the anterior wall. Higher-order modes captured relationships between atrial sphericity, anteroposterior diameter, and spatially organised conduction slowing. The unified model enabled generation of 1,000 synthetic atria whose anatomical and electrophysiological properties closely matched those of the training cohort, supporting physiologically grounded in silico studies. Repository contents 1) MATLAB Code (R2022b compatible) File: zenodoCode.zip Contains all MATLAB scripts required to run the full modelling pipeline. MAIN.m is the primary entry-point script. It configures paths and parameters and sequentially calls all required scripts for the selected analyses. 2) Synthetic atrial population File: syntheticAtria.zip Contains 1,000 synthetic left atrial models with paired geometry and conduction velocity distributions, provided as VTK files.
