Abstract

The global travel industry has entered a decisive digital era in which competitiveness is no longer determined solely by destination access, pricing strategies, or partnerships with airlines and hotels. Instead, technological capability has become the quiet engine driving international visibility, customer trust, and operational efficiency. Nigerian travel agencies, positioned within one of Africa’s largest economies and a rapidly digitizing society, possess significant latent potential to compete globally if they strategically adopt and integrate modern technological systems. The conversation is no longer about whether technology matters, but about how effectively it is deployed and aligned with business goals.¹ Digital transformation has shifted customer expectations worldwide. Travelers now anticipate instant booking confirmations, transparent pricing, real-time itinerary updates, and personalized recommendations generated through data analytics. Agencies that cannot deliver these services risk being perceived as outdated or unreliable regardless of their actual expertise. Yet this challenge also represents an opportunity. Nigerian agencies that successfully adopt digital tools can leapfrog traditional limitations such as geographic distance, infrastructure gaps, or limited international marketing reach.² The future competitiveness of Nigerian travel firms therefore rests on their ability to transform from traditional intermediaries into digitally empowered travel solution providers capable of operating seamlessly across borders.
