Abstract

The global travel industry has entered an era where competitiveness is no longer determined solely by location, connections, or capital. Instead, technological capacity has become the defining currency of relevance. For Nigerian travel agencies, this shift presents both a challenge and a remarkable opportunity. Historically, many agencies operated within regional markets, relying on personal relationships, manual booking systems, and walk-in clientele. Today, however, travelers compare services across continents within seconds, making digital visibility and operational efficiency indispensable.¹ Nigeria’s travel sector sits at a strategic intersection of growth factors: a large youth population, rising internet penetration, expanding middle-class mobility, and increasing demand for international travel. Yet despite these advantages, many agencies struggle to compete with global platforms that offer automated booking, real-time pricing, and instant customer support. The agencies that will thrive in the coming decade are those that embrace technology not as a supplementary tool, but as the foundation of their business architecture.² Competing globally does not mean becoming a multinational corporation overnight. Rather, it means structuring operations so that a client in London, Dubai, or Toronto can interact with a Nigerian agency as seamlessly as with any international provider. Digital transformation is therefore not about imitation, but about strategic adaptation that leverages local strengths while meeting global expectations.³ Understanding the Global Competitive Landscape To compete internationally, Nigerian agencies must first understand what global competition actually entails. Modern travelers evaluate agencies using criteria that were once relevant only to airlines or multinational booking platforms. They expect speed, transparency, reliability, and personalization, often simultaneously.
