Abstract

GEOTHERMOS is a Matlab‑based software designed to assess geothermal potential by integrating geological, thermal, and engineering parameters into a coherent, physics‑based workflow. It was developed within the Italian research community, involving the National Research Council (CNR), University of Padova (UNIPD) and University of Trieste (UNITS), to support reliable site screening and resource evaluation for medium‑ to high‑temperature geothermal systems. GEOTHERMOS quantifies the geothermal potential of a given area by estimating the amount of extractable heat and evaluating whether conditions are suitable for profitable geothermal development. This includes both resource assessment (how much heat is available) and reservoir performance evaluation (how efficiently it can be produced). It follows a fourstep process: i) subsurface evaluation of temperature and petrophysical parameters distributions, ii) a production borehole model coupled with the geothermal reservoir, iii) thermodynamic simulation of a specific cycle in the power plant, and iv) an economic analysis in terms of the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) to assess the feasibility of thegeothermal power plant.
