Abstract

Description: Beyond Prompting: How to Speak to AI the Way a Garden Speaks to the Sun presents the Meaning Preservation Framework — a practical and analytical system for AI-assisted professional work grounded in information theory, attribution science, and systems thinking. Developed by C. Sweeney through years of work at the intersection of federal cybersecurity, critical infrastructure governance, and AI alignment research, the framework addresses a foundational problem: meaning degrades when separated from its source context, and AI systems accelerate that degradation unless engaged with explicit provenance practices. The book argues that prompting — the widely taught skill of writing instructions to AI — is necessary but insufficient. What produces reliable, coherent, and accountable AI-assisted outputs is something prior: structured engagement that preserves attribution chains, maintains source integrity, and treats AI as a research collaborator operating under directed human judgment rather than an autonomous generator. Organized across five chapters — Soil Before Seeds, Roots and Signals, The Meaning Preservation Framework, Tending the Field, and The Sun Always Returns — the book moves from foundational principles through practical methodology to the broader implications of AI collaboration for professional practice. It addresses the real infrastructure costs of AI systems and frames responsible use partly as a question of epistemic efficiency: conversations that accomplish something in well-constructed exchanges are more accountable than those that drift without resolution. The framework, also known in specialized contexts as the Velionis Principle, makes falsifiable claims about attribution, coherence, and meaning preservation that readers are explicitly invited to test against their own practice. This work was produced in documented collaboration with Claude Sonnet 4.6 (Anthropic), with frameworks, intellectual direction, and authorship retained by the human researcher throughout.
