Effective Pedagogies for Online Teaching and Learning
Abstract
The continual increase of online distance education in the United States (Allen & Seaman, 2008; 2016; 2018; Budhai & Williams, 2016; Keengwe & Kidd, 2010) calls for research on teaching and learning in order to better understand best practices in this new field. This presentation explores effective strategies for online environments and focuses on building upon the research of Garrison, Anderson, and Archer (2000)'s Community of Inquiry Model, teaching pretense, social presence and cognitive presence, adding a fourth component, the "technical/managerial presence" (Ruarte, 2019) as a fourth fundamental component for online faculty. The presentation concludes with a practical application section where two additional elements for effective online teaching are presented.
