Sambhaal: A Community's Guide to Social Isolation in BIPOC Older Adults
Abstract
Across Canada, nearly 1.1 million older adults are facing loneliness, and for BIPOC seniors navigating systemic discrimination, language barriers, cultural displacement, the crisis runs deeper. Sambhaal ("to care for") was built by young people who refused to accept that as inevitable. This handbook is the product of a youth-led knowledge synthesis effort that brings together peer-reviewed evidence, national epidemiological data, Canadian clinical practice guidelines, municipal policy analysis, grey literature, and the lived experiences of South Asian immigrant seniors in the Greater Toronto Area and Peel Region. It is designed as both a reference and a blueprint, equipping healthcare providers, policymakers, community organizations, researchers, and emerging leaders with the tools to build culturally sensitive, evidence-informed responses to social isolation and loneliness (SIL) in diverse aging populations. Contents span five sections: foundational definitions and validated measurement instruments; risk factors, health consequences, and the disproportionate burden on BIPOC older adults; current municipal outreach and primary care approaches including social prescribing; evidence-to-action translation through policy levers, equity frameworks, community-based participatory research (CBPR), and intergenerational youth leadership; and supplementary resources with a complete Vancouver-style reference list. Rooted in health equity, cultural safety, and intergenerational solidarity, this work is freely available to anyone seeking to replicate or adapt community-driven, culturally grounded programming for older adults in their own context.
