Abstract

Who I Am and Why I Decided to Take AI-900 As a Cloud Systems Administrator, I work for a company that is new to the world of AI services and has recently started rolling them out for the first time on our Azure platform. In the past, all of my work has revolved around the infrastructure (networking, virtual machines, identity management) and how to optimize costs within those areas. However, over the last year, both our development team and analytics team have begun developing solutions based on the Azure Cognitive Services suite of tools as well as the Azure OpenAI products. When I first had an opportunity to work with both of these sets of services, it quickly became evident to me that while I knew how to deploy these services, I did not have a clear understanding of the foundational AI concepts that are the basis of those tools. For example, I could easily deploy a resource using Azure Cognitive Services; however, providing a simple explanation of the difference between classification and regression or precision and recall proved far more difficult. As a result, I chose to pursue the Microsoft AI-900: Azure AI Fundamentals certification. The AI-900 certification validates foundational knowledge for understanding machine learning and AI concepts as well as how to implement those concepts using the Azure platform (see Microsoft Learn: Exam AI-900 Webpage). According to Microsoft, there are no formal prerequisites to take the exam; however, familiarity with cloud and data concepts is recommended. For me personally, the value of obtaining this certification revolves around increasing my ability to think conceptually and strengthening my credibility as a professional. The Reality of the AI-900 Exam I verified all Microsoft certification exam policies and official Microsoft documentation before I started preparations. Official Status and Administration Per Microsoft Services-Microsoft Learn and Microsoft Certification Exam Policies: Exam Code: AI-900 Certification: Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Fundamentals Exam Status: ACTIVE Administering Entity/Location: Pearson VUE Delivery Method(s): Online Proctored or At a Pearson VUE Authorized Testing Facility. Passing Score: 700 out of 1000 Fee in USA: USD $99 (US Dollars). Regionally Local Pricing May Vary, As Stated by Microsoft. The Listed Standard Pricing Will Be $99 (US Dollars) In The United States, But Regional Price Adjustments Will Be based off of Your Country's Currency Exchange Rate. Pearson VUE Confirms That Microsoft Certifications Will Be Offered Through Continuous Scheduling. There Are No Global Fixed Testing Times; Instead You Will Be Able To Register For Your Microsoft Certification Exam Via Online Reservations Or At A Local Testing Facility (If One Exists). Skills Measured As indicated by Microsoft’s Learn, exam coverage for the AI-900 exam includes information pertaining to: AI Workloads and Considerations The Basic Principles of Machine Learning Computer Vision Workloads Natural Language Processing Workloads Generative AI Workloads Exam content is updated on a periodic basis, and therefore, the distribution of skills will likely change as time progresses (Microsoft). Question Format and Scoring Microsoft Certification Exam Policies define the following: Scores are given on a scale of 1 to 1000. A minimum score of 700 is needed to successfully pass the exam. Generally speaking, you'll have about 40-60 questions to complete; however, Microsoft does not guarantee that any specific number of questions will be present. Exam questions may include multiple choice, drag and drop, and/or scenario-based. Microsoft does not provide public information regarding specific number of questions for some versions. Difficulty Level and Common Weak Areas It is referred to as a fundamentals certification for Microsoft (AI-900), however I do not consider this to be an easy certification. According to Microsoft Q & A discussions and feedback from the community, the following are some of the most common weaknesses for candidates when attempting this exam: Differentiating between regression and classification. Evaluating metrics (precision and recall) used for assessment. Selecting the appropriate Azure AI service based on the scenario. Understanding the principles of responsible AI. I personally found evaluation metrics to be the most challenging of the four items as I did not fully understand how precision and recall could be applied in actual scenarios. Generative AI workloads required a significant amount of study due to the fact that Azure OpenAI should not be confused with conventional methods of manipulating language through NLP techniques. My Initial Study Attempts Microsoft Learn had been the first source to start learning. The modules are structured and line up with official objectives. But I saw the same issue that I had seen when I was working on previous certifications. Reading will build my understanding of a subject, but it does not prepare me to take the certification exam. I did a short review of the AI-900 Dumps to get a feel for how the questions would be laid out in the exam. As a result of that exposure, I had seen how questions would be phrased. However, just memorizing those patterns and not understanding them did not help build my confidence. I needed structured simulation and measurable feedback. Why I Chose CERTIFICATION EXAM I considered specific factors when choosing test prep platforms: Timed full-length tests, Section Quizzes, Clear answers, Tracking by category, and Pricing. Also, they have Multiple Topic Structure Practice Tests on Certification Exams. What I was looking for the most was a simulation mode that matched the exam's pacing. My goal was to discover how much I'd improved using an objective standard vs. using my gut. How I Used CERTIFICATION EXAM My preparation lasted four weeks. Week 1: Diagnostic Assessment Once I completed Microsoft Learn modules, I took a certification exam diagnostic test. I scored 70% but found the following weaknesses: Evaluation metrics Responsible AI Service selection questions The breakdown of topics clearly identified where I needed improvement. Week 2: Strengthening Core Concepts Supervised vs unsupervised learning Regression vs classification Precision, recall and F1 score Confusion matrix basics Each evening I took quizzes related to topics and reviewed explanations for both incorrect answers as well as correct answers. Week 3: Service Differentiation I made sure to distinguish clearly between: Azure Machine Learning Azure Cognitive Services Azure OpenAI Service I completed a number of repeated scenario questions to verify my reasoning for service selection. Week 4: Full-Length Simulations Pacing myself. Not overthinking. Reducing anxiety. My scores were consistent from low 70s initially through to mid 80s at the completion of all full length timed simulations, prior to the exam. The progress tracking function provided tangible evidence of my progress. Exam Day Experience I used Pearson VUE online proctoring service to schedule my exam. The process involved verifying my identity, having a web camera to view my testing area (the room), and following the strict desk policy that prohibited anything but writing instruments to be on the desk during registration until the course was completed. The assessments for these exams contained a number of scenario-answering questions requiring knowledge of how to select the correct service as well as understanding of the review metrics. Because of my timed practice, I believed I timed myself correctly during the test. I passed my evaluation over 800. The following were the most effective resources available while studying for the assessment: Frequent completion of repetitive timed simulation. Clear understanding of assessment metrics. Extensive knowledge of Azure AI Services. Professional Impact After Passing Microsoft's AI-900 certification is often regarded as a starting point for getting advanced Azure AI certifications as well. Here's the pay scale for AI roles across all areas based on publicly available data from platforms like Glassdoor and Indeed: In the USA, entry-level AI, or AI in the cloud, will generally pay between $80,000 - $120,000 per year depending on experience. In India, entry-level AI roles can pay between ₹6 LPA - ₹15 LPA. Across Europe, AI-related positions can range from €50,000 - €90,000 depending on the country and the specific area of expertise. That said, obtaining any certification will not ensure you will earn any particular amount of income but will increase your credibility and demonstrate your basic knowledge in artificial intelligence. My experience with completing the AI-900 certification, at my organisation, has increased my presence in conversations related to artificial intelligence and in the planning of solutions related to artificial intelligence. Alternatives to CERTIFICATION EXAM and a Real Comparison Prior to choosing a CERTIFICATION EXAM certification exam, there were numerous other options that I assessed.
