Abstract

THE ALGEBRAIC GEOMETRY LIQUIDATION:COMPLETE SPECTRAL REDUCTION VIA FIVE CANONICAL MATRICESPAPER 062 IN THE CARAVAN OF LINEAR ALGEBRAIC TRUTHCHRISTOPHER MICHAEL POMPETZKIABSTRACT. We define five canonical matrices whose spectral data—eigenvalues, ranks, nullities, traces, Jordan forms—encode the complete content of algebraic geometry. (I) The Multiplication Matrix MR: for f ∈ R, the matrix of multiplication by f on a quotient R/I; its joint spectrum is Spec(R), the fundamental object of scheme theory. (II) The Syzygy Matrix SR: the boundary maps in free resolutions of R-modules; the length of the rank–nullity chain determines smoothness (finite) versus singularity (infinite); Hilbert's Syzygy Theorem bounds the chain length by the embedding dimension. (III) The Čech Matrix CX: the coboundary operator on the Čech complex of a sheaf; Hi(X, ℱ) = ker / im of CX; the Riemann–Roch theorem is the alternating sum of these ranks; Serre duality is adjointness of CX under the residue pairing. (IV) The Intersection Matrix IX: the symmetric bilinear form on H*(X, ℤ) defined by the intersection pairing; the Hodge Index Theorem is Sylvester's Law of Inertia; the Standard Conjectures are positivity and algebraicity conditions on the spectral projectors of IX. (V) The Frobenius Matrix FX: the Frobenius endomorphism acting on ℓ-adic cohomology Hiét(X, ℚℓ); the Weil conjectures are eigenvalue bounds; the Riemann Hypothesis over finite fields is |λi| = qi/2; the Tate conjecture asks whether Frobenius eigenspaces are generated by algebraic cycles. All 115 open problems in algebraic geometry—including the Hodge Conjecture (Millennium Prize, $1M), Grothendieck's four Standard Conjectures, the Tate Conjecture, Resolution of Singularities in positive characteristic, the Jacobian Conjecture, the Abundance Conjecture, Homological Mirror Symmetry, and the Geometric Langlands Program—are translated into explicit spectral statements about these five matrices. The field named its own foundation "Spectrum" and then spent sixty years building a geometric cathedral on top of eigenvalues. Combined liquidation: ~140 years, >100,000 pages (EGA 1,500; SGA 6,000+; Stacks Project 7,000+; Hartshorne 496). Computational verification for all finite examples: < 1 s.“They built a religion to avoid doing matrix multiplication.”
