Belly of the Beast Interactive VR Music Experience - Video Documentation (PhD Submission)
Abstract
This dataset contains video documentation of creative practice submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at University of Technology Sydney. These videos accompany the written thesis titled 'The Role of Audio in Designing Immersive Experiences for Extended Reality: From Theory to Practice'. The files document the iterative design, development, and evaluation of the interactive VR music experience, Belly of the Beast. File Directory: Video 1: Iteration 0 (BOTB_Iteration_00_AudioPrototyping.mp4) Demonstrates the foundational audio prototyping and early user interaction mechanics explored at the inception of the project. Video 2: Iteration 1 (BOTB_Iteration_01_OfficeNarrativePrototype.mp4) Showcases the initial 'office' environment, highlighting the project's early focus on game narrative integration and world-building within the VR space. Video 3: Iteration 2 (BOTB_Iteration_02_GranularSynth.mp4) Demonstrates the pivot toward musical interaction, featuring the first functional prototype of the Granular Synthesiser component. Video 4: Full Demo (BOTB_Iteration_03_FullDemoSXSW.mp4) A capture of the full demonstration build exhibited publicly at the SXSW Sydney 2024 XR Showcase. Video 5: Final Version (BOTB_Final_Experience.mp4) Demonstrates the final, complete experience of Belly of the Beast, incorporating all iterative design refinements. Video 6: User Study & Tutorial (BOTB_UserStudy_TutorialVersion.mp4) Showcases the specific build utilised for the empirical user study (detailed in Chapter 6), featuring a guided tutorial walkthrough navigated by a novice user. Video 7: Interactive Audio Techniques Breakdown(BOTB_TechnicalBreakdown_InteractiveAudio_Wwise.mp4) A technical breakdown demonstrating the key interactive audio systems and spatialisation techniques implemented within the Wwise audio middleware to drive the final experience. Note for Examiners: These files correspond directly to the multimedia directory outlined in Appendix D of the written thesis.
