INTEGRATING BYRAM'S STRUCTURAL MODEL AND DEARDORFF'S PROCESS MODEL IN DEVELOPING INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE THROUGH HALL'S CONTEXTBASED CASE STUDIES
Abstract
In today’s interconnected world, the ability to communicate effectively acrosscultures has become an essential skill. Intercultural Communicative Competence(ICC) enables individuals to interact appropriately and effectively in diverse culturalenvironments. Although numerous frameworks exist to conceptualize ICC, mostfocus either on its structural elements or its developmental processes, rarelyaddressing practical pedagogical strategies in an integrated manner. This paperpresents an integrated model that synthesizes Byram’s structural perspective,Deardorff’s process-oriented approach, and Hall’s contextual theory to facilitate thedevelopment of ICC. The model emphasizes the cultivation of attitudes, knowledge, and skills, followed by iterative reflective processes and the application of contextsensitive case studies to bridge theory and practice. This integrated approach offerseducators and researchers a robust framework for designing intercultural learningexperiences, promoting the holistic development of communicative competence invaried cultural contexts.
