The Torah as a Structurally Constrained Morphological System: A Quantitative Study of Foundation-Letter Structure in Biblical Hebrew — Complete Research Package v4
Abstract
This study presents a computational morphological analysis of the Torah (Five Books of Moses) as a closed linguistic corpus of 76,584 tokens. Every word is decomposed into three structural layers: a foundation root (semantic anchor), a mandatory root (stable consonantal skeleton), and an expansion layer (morphological extensions). CENTRAL FINDING: Morphological expansion is governed by a restricted "control alphabet" of 10 letters — EmetNiyahu (aleph, mem, tav, nun, yod, he, vav) plus BKL (bet, kaf, lamed) — accounting for 99.87% of all 97,599 extension tokens (p ≤ 0.0003, 0/10,000 random sets). KEY RESULTS (5-fold cross-validation, 98,122 annotated pairs):• Meaning prediction (root + YHW): 87.8% ± 0.2%• Meaning prediction (root + YHW + nikud): 92.1% ± 0.2%• YHW polysemy separation: 83.2% (93.2% with nikud) on 380 roots• AMTN parallel root system: 57.6% decomposition, 96.6% YHW separation (99.3% with nikud)• Shuffle test: Z=57.72 (0/1,000) — text-specific, not language-general NEW IN THIS VERSION (v3): 1. TRAPPED YHW MECHANISM: 2.0% of Torah tokens contain a YHW letter trapped inside roots. Removing it reveals deeper roots (e.g., אהב→אב love=father, איב→אב enemy=father, זהב→זב gold=flow). Semantic classification: י=individuation, ה=direction, ו=state-change. Verse coherence improves +11.9%, with 90.9% of cases improving and 0% worsening. 2. LETTER MEM ANALYSIS: מ functions as an "object-maker" — 68.1% of מ-prefix words transform verbs into nouns (קדש→מקדש, שפט→משפט). Three distinct functions identified with different definite-article behavior. 3. CROSS-SACRED-TEXT COMPARISON: Four sacred texts analyzed with identical methodology: • Torah (Biblical Hebrew): Z = 44.1 — EXTREME structural constraint • New Testament (Koine Greek, SBLGNT): Z = 28.8 — HIGH (non-Semitic!) • Quran (Classical Arabic, Uthmani): Z = 17.0 — SIGNIFICANT • Biblical Aramaic (Daniel): Z = 0.39 — NOT SIGNIFICANT The Torah achieves 2.7× stronger clustering than the Quran with fewer letters (22 vs 28+) and produces 41% more vocabulary diversity from a smaller corpus. 4. PURE YHW ROOTS: The Hebrew time system (היה/הוה/יהיה/אהיה) is built entirely from YHW letters. The divine name יהוה contains all three YHW letters. 5. RECALCULATED NUMBERS: All prediction metrics recalculated on full gold standard (98,122 pairs, 386 semantic groups, 5-fold CV). PACKAGE CONTENTS (8 files):1.
