Measurement and Scaling
Abstract
Abstract Measurement and scaling are fundamental components of empirical research, as they determine how abstract concepts are translated into observable and analyzable variables. Sound measurement ensures that data accurately represent the phenomena of interest, while appropriate scaling enables meaningful comparison and statistical analysis. This review discusses the principles of measurement, the concepts of validity and reliability, and the four classical levels of measurement—nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio—highlighting their characteristics, uses, and implications for research design and data analysis. Keywords: Measurement, scaling, scales, validity, reliability, and analysis
