Abstract

In the framework of the topology of the closed figure‑eight energy string, this paper derives an analytical expression for the fine‑structure constant \(\alpha\) from first principles. The model is based on the fundamental picture of a single energy string topologically twisted into a closed figure‑eight shape. The string possesses three intrinsic degrees of freedom: thickness, spin, and vibration. A twist‑knot is defined as a localized concentration of a \(\pi\) (180‑degree) twist, which propagates along the string at the speed of light. Its number \(N\) uniquely determines the electric charge and intrinsic electromagnetic coupling strength of the particle. The final analytical expression for the fine‑structure constant reads: \[ \boxed{\alpha(N) = \frac{N}{16\pi\left(N^2 + \dfrac{N}{2\pi}\right)\left(1-\dfrac{1}{2\pi}\right)}} \] Every factor in the formula has a clear topological and geometric origin: \(16\pi\) arises from the geometric normalization of the double‑loop figure‑eight structure; \(N^2\) represents the topological inertia term of the twist‑knots; \(N/(2\pi)\) is the phase correction contributed by each twist‑knot passing through the central crossing point, originating from the \(4\pi\) geometric structure of one full cycle of the figure‑eight; and \(1-1/(2\pi)\) characterizes the topological defect of the non‑merging central crossing. The formula contains **no free parameters**. Substituting \(N=1,2,3\) yields the intrinsic coupling constants for the down quark, up quark, and electron, respectively. Based on this formula and combined with the standard QED renormalization‑group running, this paper further derives the effective coupling values of quarks and electrons at low energy scales: the up and down quarks unify to \(1/\alpha \approx 133.15\) at \(2\,\text{GeV}\), and the electron runs to \(137.04\) at the scale \(m_e\), in excellent agreement with the experimental value \(137.036\). The topological bare value of the weak mixing angle \(\sin^2\theta_W^{\text{topo}} \approx 0.467\) naturally falls within the grand unified theory (GUT) expected range \(0.38\sim0.42\) after standard‑model running, without any additional tuning. This work represents the first unified topological formula that derives the intrinsic electromagnetic couplings of three generations of particles without free parameters. It precisely reproduces low‑energy observational values via standard quantum field theory running, achieving a unified first‑principles description of the origin of fundamental constants. The discovery of the linear step structure provides direct evidence for twist‑knot number as a topological charge, marking a topological–geometric solution to the long‑standing mystery of the fine‑structure constant.
