Atlas of Martian Geography, MC-1
Abstract
MC-1, titled Mare Boreum, is the inaugural sectional chart in the Atlas of Martian Geography, the visual companion to Encyclopedia of Martian Geography (Thomas Gangale, JSD). This high-resolution map covers the north polar region of Mars (approximately 0°–90°N latitude, spanning the classical albedo feature Mare Boreum and adjacent areas), rendered using USGS Mars Global Surveyor Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MGS MOLA) global color shaded relief data at ~463 m/pixel resolution.Key scholarly features include: Precise overlays of revived classical albedo nomenclature from 19th- and early 20th-century telescopic observations (e.g., by Giovanni Schiaparelli, Percival Lowell, Eugène Antoniadi, and contemporaries), integrating ~400 historical names not retained in modern IAU Gazetteer usage. Cross-references to contemporary IAU-approved toponyms (e.g., linking classical "Mare Boreum" to features like Planum Boreum, Vastitas Borealis, and polar ice cap regions). Etymological and historical annotations embedded or referenced, preserving the mythological, literary, and geographical origins of albedo designations while aligning them with post-Mariner/Viking/MGS-era topographic and altimetric reality. Emphasis on the transition from telescopic "albedo geography" (perceived dark/bright markings interpreted as seas, continents, canals, etc.) to modern areography, bridging astronomical heritage with spacecraft-derived cartography. As the first in a phased series (with two new charts released weekly following launch), MC-1 serves as a foundational reference for interdisciplinary studies in planetary cartography, history of astronomy, astrogeology, and future Mars exploration/settlement planning. It exemplifies the project's goal of enriching Martian place-name databases with deeper cultural layers without supplanting official IAU nomenclature.MC-1 is distributed open-access via Zenodo, alongside the encyclopedia text and subsequent charts (e.g., MC-2). Citation recommended: Gangale, T. (2026). Atlas of Martian Geography: MC-1 Mare Boreum. This chart revives the classical vision of Mars' northern "sea" while grounding it in precise modern topography, contributing to a more holistic understanding of Martian geography across eras.
