Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) dan Bias Gender dalam Wacana Kekerasan Kampus di Media Sosial
Abstract
This study examines the phenomenon of fear of missing out (FOMO) in digital public discourse following a viral violent incident at a higher education institution in Indonesia. Using qualitative content analysis of social media reactions, this research explores how emotional solidarity, moral panic, and gender-based generalization emerged rapidly before complete factual clarification was available. The findings indicate that a significant portion of online responses were driven by collective emotional alignment rather than evidence-based evaluation, resulting in premature moral judgments and generalized narratives. The study highlights how viral dynamics on social media platforms can intensify partial perspectives and amplify unverified interpretations, particularly in cases involving sensitive social identities. This research contributes to digital sociology and media ethics by emphasizing the importance of critical digital literacy, responsible engagement, and ethical restraint in online activism. The study does not justify any form of violence and positions its analysis within an academic framework aimed at understanding social media behavior rather than assigning individual blame.
