La campagna archeologica 2023 in località Cittanova di Modena
Abstract
Archaeological investigations carried out between June and December 2023 in the area of the new Campogalliano–Sassuolo highway link, following those of 2020–2021, have clarified the historical and architectural development of the site, characterized by complex stratification from the Republican period to Late Antiquity. In the Republican age, the area featured a complex with a porticoed courtyard, brick structures, drainage channels, wells, and foundations later reused; particularly notable is an apsidal room with a water-drainage system. In the Imperial period, the complex underwent monumentalization, with expansions, new rooms, and more imposing hydraulic infrastructures, indicating a functional change. The study of four wells yielded coins, ceramics, metal tools, and a long iron chain, probably part of a pumping system; beneath the Roman levels, an Etruscan well was also identified. The evidence confirms the importance of the site within the Modena plain and a continuous process of transformation linked to the socio-economic needs of each period.
