Abstract

Commerce education constitutes a significant component of the higher education system, contributing to the development of knowledge, analytical abilities, managerial competencies, and financial literacy essential for participation in business, trade, industry, and entrepreneurship. In the context of economic liberalization, globalization, and technological advancement, commerce education has acquired heightened relevance. However, despite its expansion across educational institutions in India, concerns regarding its quality, curriculum relevance, and alignment with industry requirements persist. The present study examines the status of commerce education in India with a focus on identifying major challenges and exploring emerging opportunities. The study adopts a conceptual and descriptive research design based, primarily on secondary data derived from academic literature, institutional reports, and policy documents. The analysis is further supported by academic observations relating to pedagogical practices, curriculum frameworks, and skill development initiatives. The findings of the study reveal that commerce education is confronted with several structural and academic challenges, including outdated curricula, inadequate integration of practical and skill-based learning, limited industry collaboration, infrastructural constraints, and insufficient career guidance mechanisms. These factors contribute to a gap between academic preparation and professional expectations. Simultaneously, the study highlights emerging opportunities arising from technological developments, digital learning platforms, MOOCs, blended learning models, and professional certification programs. The study underscores the necessity for systematic curriculum reforms, enhanced industry-academia partnerships, adoption of technology-enabled pedagogical strategies, and greater emphasis on competency-based education. Such measures are essential for improving academic effectiveness, employability outcomes, and the overall relevance of commerce education in a dynamic economic environment.
