Abstract

The platonic solid of the Icosahedron with 20 triangular faces is in some sense the best regular tessellation that approximates a sphere surface. The C++ program icosplit splits each of these triangular faces into s^2 smaller regular triangles, and projects each of their vertices to the unit sphere by normalizing the Euclidean length of these points to unity. The convex hull of these points is a better approximation to the sphere surface than the Icosahedron. The triangles are one way of generating geodetic grids of rather regular appearance.
