Abstract

Biological cognitive heuristics evolved under environmental conditions characterized by low causal depth, slow feedback cycles, and high social-affective signal density.Contemporary technogenic environments invert each of these parameters: causal chains are deep and latent, feedback is delayed and indirect, and operationally critical signals are abstract, logical, and quantitative. This paper formalizes the resulting cognitive mismatch as a structural incompatibility between the control bandwidth of biologically calibrated agents and the complexity requirements of the systems they operate and govern. Using information theory, control theory, and complex systems formalism, we derive a mismatch threshold — the critical system complexity above which biological heuristics become net-negative control inputs. We demonstrate that modern technological infrastructure has crossed this threshold in multiple critical domains, that the crossing is accelerating non-linearly, and that the problem is symmetric across sex and culture: it is a species-level constraint, not a group-level one. The AI alignment problem is analyzed as a canonical instantiation of the same structural incompatibility. Implications for institutional design and cognitive augmentation requirements are discussed.
