Abstract

The Groundskeeper's Treatise performs a diagnostic reading of Patrick Grady's nine-part essay series 'On Platforms' (Substack, December 2025–February 2026) through the Semantic Economy framework. Grady, the CEO of TetraScience, develops a theory of semantic capacity as an economic primitive. This paper demonstrates that his framework is descriptively accurate and theoretically incomplete in a structurally predictable way: it contains no theory of extraction, no account of who bears the cost of semantic stabilization, no mechanism for predicting exhaustion, and no structural explanation for why the steward's interests diverge from the commons it claims to serve. The incompleteness is positional: Grady writes from the position of the platform steward, and his framework systematically reproduces the steward's perspective as general theory. The paper identifies his explicit redefinition of political economy — excluding authority, scarcity, and allocation — as the foundational ideological move that enables the entire series. It reads his five-layer platform stack as legislation rather than engineering, and his theory of benevolent stewardship as the inverted image of a public counterfactual biography that structurally mirrors the series' steward-versus-legacy narrative. The Semantic Economy subsumes the entire series as a special case (extraction = 0, bearing-cost = infinity, steward = benevolent). The paper introduces semantic conscription (formally voluntary, structurally compulsory participation) and cognitive rent (capacity consumed by governance rather than production), and generates five structural predictions Grady's framework cannot produce: platform capture, participant exhaustion, ontological foreclosure, corpus depletion, and constitutional bloat. The deliverable is a six-marker executable audit protocol that can be applied to any platform framework to detect extraction masked as stewardship. Grady's series triggers all six markers.
