Abstract

The Collatz series of papers has established that the odd integers behave as states on the Poincaré homology sphere S³/2I, with the Collatz operator T = sᵏ ∘ (t + 1) derived from the generators of the binary icosahedral group 2I. The convergence proof is conditional on one identification: that the integer tower is the covering space of S³/2I. This paper proves that the identification is not a free assumption but a conditional theorem. The argument has three steps. First, the Collatz generators s = ÷2 and t = ×3 are type-compatible with the 2I generators in quaternion algebra: the group presentation ⟨s, t | s² = t³ = (st)⁵ = −1⟩ is verified explicitly with unit quaternions s = (0, φ⁻¹, −φ, 1)/2 and t = (1, −1, 1, −1)/2, where φ = (1+√5)/2. Second, by Perelman's geometrization theorem (2003), the unique compact orientable 3-manifold with fundamental group 2I is S³/2I — once the fundamental group is identified as 2I, the manifold is forced with no further assumption. Third, the spectral gap of this forced manifold is λ₁ = 168 = |GL(3,𝔽₂)|, independently confirmed from 2I representation theory and distinct from the gaps of all other binary polyhedral space forms (2T: λ₁ = 24; 2O: λ₁ = 48). These results convert the identification from a pure assumption to a conditional theorem: given the framework identification of the Collatz generators with 2I, Perelman uniquely forces S³/2I. The remaining open problem — whether the 2-adic completion ℤ₂× with the Collatz dynamics is measure-theoretically conjugate to S³ with the 2I action — is stated precisely as a conjecture in equivariant topology, with three supporting observations. The paper concludes that the Collatz convergence proof is conditional on one cleanly-stated conjecture, not on an unspecified family of geometric assumptions.
